Biography

Wendy Webb Kumer attended Duquesne University with a major in Music Education then earned a masters degree in Flute Performance from Carnegie Mellon University. She has been on the faculties of Carnegie Mellon, Slippery Rock and Duquesne Universities, and most recently West Liberty State College and Mercyhurst College teaching Flute, Music Theory, Ear Training, Woodwind Methods, and Flute Choir. Ms. Kumer is the founder and director of The Flute Academy, a full service music school for more than 100 flutists in classes, lessons and ensembles who perform throughout western Pennsylvania. She is an Artist/Clinician for the Conn Selmer Corporation, Music For All, and Bands of America, former Secretary for The Marcel Moyse Society, Immediate Past President of the Pittsburgh Flute Club, and a guest artist at several universities. Her yearly performance schedule includes solo recitals, chamber music concerts, and regular church appearances. Wendy was invited to conduct the National High School Flute Choir at the 2002 NFA convention, served as Secretary for the NFA from 2003-05, served as Local Arrangements Chair for the 2006 NFA convention and assistant program chair for the 2007 NFA convention.

 

2006 Flute Academy Highlights, Wendy Webb Kumer, Director

  • February 11: Performed on stage at Heinz Hall accompanied by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with 60 flutists performing Kirk Vogel’s “The Secret Language of Snow”
  • June 5: Heinz Hall Lobby concert of PSO’s Composer in Residence, Jennifer Higdon’s works for flute choir.
  • August 10: Combined flute choirs (65 members) from the Flute Academy perform a showcase concert at the NFA convention in Pittsburgh.
  • August 11: Flute Academy Faculty is featured in a Healing and Remembrance concert at the NFA convention performing Higdon’s “Amazing Grace” and “Steeley Pause”
  • August 12: Flute Academy joins members of the Pittsburgh Flute Club to create a 180 member flute choir performing in the NFA GALA CONCERT at the convention accompanied by a professional orchestra comprised of members of the PSO.
  • September 15: 35 of the finest young players from the Flute Academy perform opening night on Heinz Hall stage with James Galway and the Pittsburgh Symphony in a world premier of “Galway Fair” by David Overton.
  • September 15: 60 additional flutists perform Irish and Celtic flute choir music outdoors in 3 flute choirs throughout Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.
